She’s a trained medical doctor with experience. Yet, she cannot find a job. She also has an adult dependent child with disabilities. She receives no support from the father. Her story of finding herself without work and near eviction is a cautionary tale.
She was born and educated overseas, where she received her MD. She emigrated to America and found work as a doctor. When our Vincentians met her, she’d been living in the Atlanta area over 10 years. Her disabled son is her dependent and attends school online. At the time of the first meeting, she was behind on her electric and water bills as well as her reasonable rent payment.
She had been vigorously pursuing job opportunities but was unsuccessful. She had been generating income by translating documents from her native language to English, but that source had slowed considerably. Our Vincentians met with her, listened carefully to her story, and agreed that she’d been very diligent in trying to find work and resourceful in seeking assistance. They said some prayers with her too.
The first support provided was to bring her current on the utilities. The next step was to work with her landlord to avoid eviction and onerous, costly fees. Thanks to the generosity of our IHM parish members, we were able to assist with a rent payment large enough to avoid eviction. In this time of the Christmas Season, even doctors need our help. There are many more of our neighbors who are in need, and not always the most obvious ones.
St. Vincent DePaul thanks you for your ongoing support of our mission to help the poor. We wish the blessings of the Christ Child upon you and your families!
