“Whether fleeing war, natural disaster, or persecution, the positive contributions of refugees to our society have been well documented. First and foremost, however, we recognize them as vulnerable members of the same human family to which we ourselves belong. In a special way, we as Catholics are called to this ministry of welcome and encounter, through which we express the fullness of the Church’s universality.”
- USCCB Committee on Migration
IHM is pleased to partner with Catholic Charities Atlanta to help settle a newly-arrived refugee family from Afghanistan to the Atlanta area.
The refugee family from Afghanistan whom we are sponsoring as a parish has arrived! After spending their first 2 months in the U.S. on an Army base, the widowed mom and her 6 children—ages 18 months to 18 years!—arrived in Atlanta this week.
The need for financial support for the family is now immediate and urgent. We will dedicate everything we receive through iGiveCatholic this year to this important undertaking. Thank you for your generosity and for helping us give a Christ-like welcome to this family.
There will be lots of ways for IHM members to help and it will take all of us to help this family settle in their new home!
What Can I Do?
While there will be lots of virtual ways to help (donations and gift registry), there will also be a lot of opportunities to assist the family in person. All volunteers will need to be background-checked and VIRTUS trained. To get a head start, please visit the Safe Environment Compliance page at the Archdiocese of Atlanta at
https://archatl.com/ministries-services/safe-environment/safe-environment-compliance/. From there, you can search for and register for a nearby VIRTUS Protecting God’s Children training session.
